While multisensory instruction is the BEST means of instructing any child, you can make instruction even more effective by gearing instruction to your child's primary learning style first. Reinforcement of concepts through his secondary and tertiary learning channels serves to strengthen retention and recall, and maximizes learning.

Learning-style based lesson planning is accomplished in a similar fashion to multisensory lesson planning. The main difference is that with Learning-style based planning, the initial presentation of new content or concepts is done through the child's primary learning style. Information is best absorbed when both the primary and secondary learning styles are used simultaneously, but using the styles sequentially is better than using only one style. Teaching is then followed by reinforcing activities, which include the tertiary learning style as well as the primary and secondary learning styles.

Planning such lessons may be difficult in the beginning, but once you start teaching in a variety of ways, thinking of multisensory activities will become second-nature.
