Q: I have had to battle my school system for my first child. Now my second child is struggling even harder. Will it be easier to get services the second time around?

Answer:

I have two children with dyslexia and it is my opinion that you will have to battle just as hard, if not harder with a resistent school system, for two reasons:

1) If her difficulties are more severe, she will require more intense remediation.

2) The school may dig their heels in at you requesting "more" services, even if they are for a completely different child.

After our treacherous dealings with the first, going through it all with the second was something that made me ill! Our experience was horrible and things with our second child with dyslexia were not going very well... when the second started BEGGING to be homeschooled, I started seriously considering it and it was the BEST decision we ever made--Instant stress relief for EVERYONE in the family!!

After years of battling with the school system on behalf of our oldest, we began home schooling last year and my eldest went from a 1.9 to a 6.2 reading level in one year of home schooling! It is amazing what can be done if the job is done right. I went and took Orton-Gillingham training before beginning to homeschool, and did TONS of research. I am now getting my Master's degree--Might as well get something for all of the work I'm putting into learning about education!! :-D

I'm not suggesting you should homeschool, but just sharing that it wasn't any easier for us with the second, so home schooling was our solution (We couldn't afford the private schools that actually provide remediation for children with dyslexia).

Best Wishes,
Sandy
